It is great to announce a brand new Sleeping Bag, this time in partnership with the London Marriott Hotel West India Quay, who have been giving us their condemned bed linen since we launched.
The bag features specially commissioned ‘In My Dreams’ artwork by the fashion designer Avsh Alom Gur, three time winner of the British Fashion Council’s ‘New Generation Award’, and all round inspiration for Sleeping Bags.
The bags are available in-room and from reception at West India Quay, with profits going to the youth charity, Fairbridge, part of The Prince’s Trust.

At Sleeping Bags, we always enjoy the opportunity to make new things for new customers. Not only does it mean that we are spreading the word and expanding our customer base, but it also allows us to further develop our products and designs.
Our latest partner is 47 Park Street Grand Residences by Marriott. Located in Mayfair, just behind Park Lane, the property has 49 apartments, all of which now feature bespoke, luxurious ‘SMART THINKING’ laundry bags (design pictured) and ‘WIND OF CHANGE’ hairdryer bags, from Sleeping Bags.
Furthermore, both these products are made entirely from 47 Park Street’s linen, making this a great example of the ‘local loop’ model that Sleeping Bags sets out to achieve.

Whilst Sleeping Bags has a range of environmental and social goals, our main aim has always been to reduce the amount of stuff going to landfill and dramatically change peoples’ perceptions of waste.
The opportunity to help meet these challenges first hit us when we found out about the availability of retired luxury hotel bed linen. In one year, the top 300 hotel chains condemn enough bed linen to go round the world twice if it was laid end to end. This was the moment the light went on, there was no turning back!
We always knew though, that in order to get to grips with something of this scale, we would need to build close working relationships with not only the hotels but also the companies who supply and launder their linen. That’s why we’re delighted to announce a new partnership with Sunlight Textile Services, the UK’s market leader in this area.
As well as a breath taking tour of their plant - the largest laundry in Europe, running 24 hours a day, cleaning and pressing 5 million pieces a week - Sleeping Bags are now receiving monthly deliveries of retired linen from Sunlight and working on a number of other initiatives together. It’s a truly exciting step in our development and we are looking forward to ensuring that Sunlight’s condemned stock leads a valuable second life as Sleeping Bags, rather than ending up in landfill.

Sleeping Bags Under The Monocle
Recently, we had a visit from Dan and Aleks from Monocle Magazine. They spent a few hours with us at our factory, seeing how we make our bags and talking about the Sleeping Bags concept. They loved what we’re doing, so much so that they made this fantastic video, giving a little insight into what happens behind the scenes.

Last week we launched another new bag with the Marriott Marble Arch. This one however, is particularly special and a real first for Sleeping Bags.
Based on her birds design, Vicki Murdoch produced a limited run of just twenty five bags, with each one hand painted by the artist herself. The result is a series of beautiful and unique pieces that are not only works of art but also functional items. Needless to say we’re delighted with the results.
Both standard and special edition bags are available at the London Marriott Hotel Marble Arch, with all profits going to St. Mungo’s.

We’re delighted to now be on sale at the London Marriott Hotel Marble Arch!
The Sleeping Bag in question is a beautiful new colour-way of Vicki Murdoch’s ever popular bird design; silver with ice blue detail.
Even better, all the proceeds from the sale of the Sleeping Bags go to local charity St. Mungo’s, who provide housing, support and training for the London homeless community.
The design is available in-room and from reception at the hotel.

It’s been a busy few months at Sleeping Bags, so it’s great to announce the launch of a new tote in conjunction with London’s Barbican Art Gallery. To coincide with the exhibition, ‘Laurie Anderson, Trisha Brown, Gordon Matta-Clark: Pioneers of the Downtown Scene, New York 1970s’, the Barbican are displaying Jason Bruges’s fantastic video installation, ‘In My Dreams’ (created specifically for Sleeping Bags), with totes featuring artwork taken from the film available for purchase.
Having been lucky enough to sneak along to the opening night last night, we can testify that it’s a fascinating exhibition about some truly groundbreaking people and well worth a visit. The exhibition’s on until the 22nd May but if you can’t make it along and still want to get your hands on a bag, don’t worry because you can get them right here.
That’s not all either, you can also find out more about Jason and his involvement with Sleeping Bags

Jason Bruges – In My Dreams for Sleeping BagsWhat excites or delights you about the Sleeping Bags concept?“I love the reuse or reappropriation of unexpected things. This concept is mirrored in the studios work which looks at technology transfer, the use of technologies and artefacts in a way you wouldn’t envisage.”Tell us about your In My Dreams design – the story and inspiration?“I am fascinated in the way we occupy space and how that relationship between us and our environment has changed drastically with time. Muybridge and Marey (exhibition currently at the Tate Britain) and the tradition of chronophotography and capturing… movement and analysing it is central to my work. The design was created through a process of capturing movement during a dream / sleep sequence.”Tell us one of your bedtime secrets or about a favourite dream“We’re lucky this isn’t a self-portrait otherwise this would be very dull. I literally sleep like a log and do not move.”Jason creates interactive spaces and surfaces that sit between the worlds of architecture, interaction design and site-specific installation art.

Oonagh O’Hagan – In My Dreams for Sleeping BagsWhat excites or delights you about the Sleeping Bags concept?“There is something very satisfying about rejuvenating something that has apparently come to the end of its life. No one or no thing wants to be tossed away or left on the shelf.”Tell us about your In My Dreams design – the story and inspiration?“I love dreaming! I often use the aesthetic of low tech photocopying in my work and as dreams often feel very cut and paste this seemed apt! They never translate so well the next day … but … I was on a very busy train, maybe in china, and was peeling a satsuma… as i looked down, i realised inside was the most tiny and adorable little monkey. odd. but when I woke, I felt so happy to have seen it. Especially since the night before I’d dreamt that I was hosing down an iguana, and the night before that trying to help a white cat that was covered in glass and blood. I’m sure all 3 speaks volumes.”Helen is finishing her MA Fashion for Textiles at Central Saint Martins and is a fashion illustration teacher, with a few breaks working at John Galliano and Ossie Clark amongst others.

Mungo’s.

Avsh Alom Gur won the British Fashion Council’s “New Generation Award” for up-and-coming designers, three seasons in a row. He launched his own label to much acclaim in 2005, having previously worked at Donna Karan and Chloe.

My design was inspired by the last things I see or think about or leave on the bed just before I go to bed. Loose change, oversized rabbits in the shape of pillows, hair bands, pens to scribble down notes etc., very eclectic!”Tell us one of your bedtime secrets or about a favourite dream“I often dream about flying but my flying is by doing breastroke through the air and I fly just above head height. If I slow down I start falling on people’s heads. They are fun dreams but quite exhausting…I always feel that if I gave it a go I might just be able to do it in real life!”Oonagh is an author (I Lick My Cheese and I Love You With Custard On Top), fashion designer (Louis Vuitton, Burberry, Browns) and lecturer.

David McCandless – In My Dreams for Sleeping BagsWhat excites or delights you about the Sleeping Bags concept?“I love the reclaiming and re-use of hotel sheets. I had no idea they did that.”Tell us about your In My Dreams design – the story and inspiration?“I love visualising information and data, looking for patterns and connection. So I wondered are there any patterns in my dreams? The emotional content, the scenarios, the intensity? I kept a dream diary over a month and made the results into an image. I found it fascinating actually and have kept (an extremely private) dream diary ever since.”Tell us one of your bedtime secrets or about a favourite dream“I’ve had around 3 or 4 lucid dreams in my life. In one dream, I fell asleep in the dream and had a dream. And that dream was about 10 times more vivid and real, that ‘real’ life. Is your head exploding yet?”David is an information artist and has had two books published, entitled Information is Beautiful and The Visual Miscellaneum.

Helen Bullock – In My Dreams for Sleeping BagsWhat excites or delights you about the Sleeping Bags concept? “The Sleeping Bags concept is great in the way that it doesn’t give up on something just because there’s a little tear or mark on it! Such a great feeling to know that you’ve rescued something that was going to be discarded. A luxury sheet becoming a practical bag.”Tell us about your In My Dreams design – the story and inspiration?
“I wanted to take the idea of ‘In my dreams’ in a literal sense of day dreams. The idea of that blissful almost teenage time when things work out well in your head, and Mr Right is falling for you and not your best friend, isn’t married, and isn’t living on the other side of the world. A world where you are the dreamer , the protagonist, and the star….”Tell us one of your bedtime secrets or about a favourite dream “Bedtime secrets???? i think I’ll go with a dream!
